Cal Poly Registration: A New Perspective

It was the best of quarters, it was the worst of quarters.

Registration is just around the corner, and every college student at Cal Poly is experiencing either a minor mental breakdown or is grinning with satisfaction, knowing they have successfully enrolled in the courses they need.

Most of the time it’s the minor mental breakdown scenario.

Enrolling in the courses one needs can be a struggle. Not only do most students end up in courses that don’t particularly interest them, but some end up with minimal units. At Cal Poly a student must be enrolled in at least twelve units to be considered a “full-time” student. However, in order to graduate in four years, 16 units per quarter is ideal. After interviewing two Cal Poly Students, Danica Schutt (sophomore) and Jennifer Corcoran (freshman), it was evident that enrolling in the full 16 units is harder than it seems. Their personal experiences offer first-hand insight into the tedious, quarterly process of class registration at Cal Poly.

In order to gain insight into the process and how it works, Zoe Kline, a student who currently works at the Mustang Success Center, provides an ulterior perspective about the registration process. Kline is in training to be the next Coordinator of the First Year Success Program, where she will serve as an academic advisor for incoming freshman students. With her experience working at the Mustang Success Center, Kline provides valuable knowledge of why this process can be what many people call a “nightmare.”

Kline describes her role at the Mustang Success Center, identifies the resources on campus that aim to help students with registration, and offers her own advice about how to go about registering. Her perspective is informative and ataractic do to her professional approach and two-sided experience. Since Kline is a student at Cal Poly, she has experienced the angst that accompanies registration, yet provides a somewhat calming viewpoint due to her involvement at the Mustang Success Center.

By approximately next fall, Kline will be the Coordinator of the First Year Success Program, where she will help freshman students plan their future and achieve success during their time at Cal Poly. Her role is essential in helping students eliminate stress and feel comfortable with the registration process. Cal Poly offers a wide variety of resources with the purpose of helping students achieve their academic goals. Kline advocates the importance of taking advantage of these resources provided by the university.

A quick meeting with Kline and the Mustang Success Center staff may save a student from one of those quarterly, minor mental breakdowns.
